Forum Topic: "what are my chances?"

female from washington dc (but have lived in china, taiwan, bolivia)
i speak chinese
SATs: 690V, 680M, 640W
i've taken 3 aps
5 on human geo and us history
4 on lang
i'm taking 5 ap's this year.
my gpa isn't great. i slacked off freshman and sophomore year (and also went to one of the most competitive intl. schools in asia)
it's a 3.5. (3.2 for first two years, and 4.15 for junior year)
what are my chances at getting in to these schools?

davidson
kenyon
bates
william+mary
michigan
vermont

I think you're chances are pretty good as long as you keep working through this year. Strong essays and recommendations will probaby be important factors.

I would disagree. The DC area is highly competitive. Many smaller schools (like Davidson) are waaayy selective and will only take the best. Michigan receives probably 100s of applications from the DC area every year and these students are some of the best applying.

If your weighted GPA is only a 3.5, that would be a problem. Your unweighted would be below the average of many schools. Your SATs are also not particularly good, nor above average. I think you have a good chance at making the lesser-known schools on your list, but it would be difficult to be competitive with other students in your area (which was my area last fall). If I were you, I would work hard senior year and get straight As so your weighted GPA will come out to well above 4.0. Then, if you get waitlisted somewhere, you can come out strong and show significant improvement.
